Mahe in Pictures
Mayyazhi, as my Ammamma still refers to Mahe was how it was originally called. Geographically located in the state of Kerala, Mahe comes under the Union Territory of Pondicherry.
Mahe, like all other towns in Kerala is undergoing a sea change. It is no longer the sleepy coastal town that once enchanted me. The long flight of stairs made of stones have been replaced by roads, the narrow lanes have widened and the town suddenly seems to be crowded. And the most painful change of all, we do not seem to know our neighbors anymore.
Since, I spent only my summer vacations in Mahe, each year did show up changes. Just that, it was not all too sudden and I complained under my breath every year about my dislike.
Mahe has grown in its own way. The beach, which was only visited by us and invited questioning looks from the locals then, now finds regular evening walkers. The walkway has made the deserted park a tourist spot. The beach, which was a sprint away now cannot be reached without a car. Well, the last one is not because Mahe has changed.
All the above changes can easily be applied to any town, but if there is one thing I miss, its the summer vacations at Ammamma's house. No vacation at the best resorts can match up to the simple joys of childhood.
The Mahe beach
The above are old pictures. While the last time, I was in Mahe was in 2017, I do not have decent pictures to show how the place looks now. Something to go on my to-do list when I visit next time.
*** I know poor pictures, but that is all I have.
