BWW # 144 - Paper Cakes from Malabar
The above picture is my entry for this week's edition of BWW.
Now, this post deserves a few lines.
These Kadalasu Cakes ( Meaning paper cakes) are a hot favorite in our part of Kerala. As a kid, anyone who returned from Kerala had only one request from me. I was not keen about the Halwa or the chips, but these cakes. YES!!!
During Summer Vacations, Ammamma's house in Mahe was stocked with these cakes. All the cousins loved the cake. In Mahe, it was compulsory for the kids to take a nap in the afternoons. After Lunch, all of us were put in different rooms in batches of 3 or 4 and asked to nap. I would toss and turn for a while, and when I was sure that the elders in the house are taking a nap, I would sneak in to the store room.
Now, Ammamma knows her regular visitor. She would let me in and I would grab the cakes. I cannot eat much as I have to eat during tea time. I skip the tea time, then my brothers will know what is going on.
Many such afternoons were spent talking to ammamma in that store room. She would also take me around her backyard and show me her plants. It amazes me every time, how a food item brings back all those memories and makes relishing the food all the more wonderful.
Now, my kids love these cakes. I cannot leave the cakes lying around anymore. Life is one vicious circle.
